About Guru Gobind Singh Ji: Champion of Equality and Fearless Leadership

Guru Gobind Singh was born Gobind Rai in Patna in 1666. He became the 10th Sikh guru in 1675 at the tender age of 9 after the execution of his father Guru Tegh Bahadur by Mughal forces.

This meant he needed to take on great responsibility at a very young age. Guru Gobind Singh formally militarised the Sikhs by founding the Khalsa order. He introduced the 5 K’s – five articles of faith that Khalsa Sikhs must wear at all times.

He declared the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Sikh guru. Guru Gobind Singh traveled extensively and composed scholarly works and beautiful poetry. He fought a number of battles against the Mughals before moving to Nanded in 1708.

Here he was stabbed by two pathans sent by Wazir Khan. Before his death, Guru Gobind Singh passed on the spiritual authority to the holy text and the temporal authority to the Khalsa Panth.
