Guru Har Rai Dev Ji
(1630 – 1661)
Soulful Narration: Understanding The Life History of Guru Har Rai Ji
Guru Har Rai was the son of Baba Gurdita and grandson of Guru Hargobind, becoming the seventh Sikh guru in 1644 at age 14.
He supported interfaith dialogue and had cordial ties with Mughal emperors Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, often acting as their mediator. But he was prepared militarily to defend his community if required.
Guru Har Rai made additions to the Sikh scriptures and nominated the revered Baba Buddha as masand (leader of the clergy). He promoted healing with medicinal herbs in a herbal garden to care for the sick.
Guru Har Rai was respected by Sikhs and Muslims alike for his kind nature, impartiality and spiritual wisdom. He appointed his younger son Har Krishan as the eighth guru before passing away in 1661.
